New U.S. Citizens Mistakenly Receive Congratulatory Letter From Obama

Newly minted U.S. citizens customarily receive a letter from the current president of the United States welcoming them as Americans, but some new citizens recently received a letter from someone no longer in the White House: Barack Obama.

Attention to the mistake was raised when a columnist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said Friday that she noticed the name signed on her British-born husband’s letter from the president was not that of President Donald Trump.

“My British-born husband takes his oath of citizenship today,” Aisha Sultan wrote on Twitter. “In the packet for new Americans, the welcome letter from POTUS is from Obama.”

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services press secretary Gillan Christensen told the Hill that the packets signed by Obama were an administration oversight and that about 200 letters from the previous administration were distributed.

Approximately 300,000 people have been naturalized since Trump entered the White House in January, she said.
